Finding things to do nearby

What can I do alone when my friends aren't available?

Solo activities get treated as the consolation prize when plans with friends fall through, but there's decent evidence that time spent alone, chosen deliberately rather than as a last resort, is genuinely good for you - it's a different kind of experience, not a lesser one.

The trick is choosing something that's actually suited to being alone rather than a watered-down group activity. A long walk somewhere new, a gallery or museum at your own pace, trying a cafe or restaurant solo, a class where you're focused on the activity rather than the company, or simply exploring a part of your own town you've never properly looked at, all work better alone than in a group, if anything.

Reframing it helps too - "I couldn't get anyone to come" and "I chose to do this on my own" describe the exact same afternoon, but they feel completely different, and the second one is usually closer to the truth once you actually go.
